They are grown in pots or containers. Many plants that can be grown successfully indoors, because of their attractiveness and ease of maintenance, are generally considered the best houseplants. These include the succulents, cacti, ferns, begonias, and palms, all of which have long been favorites. Growing indoor plants is not difficult if proper environment for each plant is provided. The most important factors affecting plant growth and success are light, temperature, water, humidity, soil, and fertilization.

Broad categories include trees, shrubs, flowering plants, non-flowering plants and succulents. While many of these plants can be grown indoors, they thrive outdoors with natural sun and shade, nutrient-rich earth and ample water. All types of plants were originally outdoor plants, but certain plants are now referred to as indoor plants, because of their low tolerance for cool temperatures, their long life span and their ability to thrive in pots.
