Climbers

Climbers

Any plant that is growing to its full height needs some support. Climbing plants may climb over a support, twine up a slender support, or grasp the support by special structures such as adventitious arial roots, tendrils, hook-tipped leaves or stipular thorns. Some climbing plants when not supported become trailing plants.

Climbing plants grown either directly against the walls or on support structures integrated to external building walls. Similar to other types of GI, green walls are promoted because of their benefits in reducing the building energy consumption and adaptation to a warming climate.

The plants on the facades reduce the temperature of the building wall surfaces by absorbing incoming solar radiation and providing thermally resistive air gaps between foliage and the external building wall. Green walls cause significant reduction in cooling demands, particularly in hot climates. In cold climates, green facades act as an exterior insulation and decrease the magnitude of heat loss through the building envelope, with a significant reduction in building energy use. Green walls also bring some additional benefits, such as improving air quality, reducing energy consumption, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
