The most important factors affecting plant growth and success are light, temperature, water, humidity, soil, and fertilization.

Broad categories include trees, shrubs, flowering plants, non-flowering plants and succulents. While many of these plants can be grown indoors, they thrive outdoors with natural sun and shade, nutrient-rich earth and ample water. All types of plants were originally outdoor plants, but certain plants are now referred to as indoor plants, because of their low tolerance for cool temperatures, their long life span and their ability to thrive in pots.
