ZZ Plant

  • Scientific Name: Zamioculcas zamiifolia
  • Common Name: Zamia palm, Cardboard palm
  • Description: Zamia cardboard palm does have pinnate leaves like a palm tree, but they are rounded with a thick tuberous stem. The evergreen leaflets grow in opposing pairs of up to 12 per stem. It is a low-growing plant that may spread 3 to 4 feet (1 m.) and an underground trunk. The trunk stores moisture in times of drought, which makes Zamia ideal for xeriscape gardens.
  • Uses: ZZ plant is a good air-purifier, which eliminates toxins in air such as xylene, toluene and benzene to a great extent. Its roots are rich in steroid, flavonoid and polyphenolic. Require very low-maintenance. It has great ornamental value. Mostly used indoor in shelves and in bedroom.

Soil Requirement The best soil is a loose, porous mixture, like a combination of peat moss, leaf mold, and shredded bark.
Environment Average temperature of approximately (15-24°C) and no lower than (8°C). Bright light is good but not essential. It can grows with low levels of light, but it’s best to avoid direct sunlight.
Watering Water thoroughly then allow top 2 in (5 cm) to dry out before watering again.  Water deeply weekly in summer but reduce moisture in winter and fall by half.
