What Flowers Are Easy to Grow Without Sun?

What Flowers Are Easy to Grow Without Sun?

Published on: April 22, 2026

Several flowers that can easily grow with little to no direct sunlight, including:

These plants are adapted to low-light environments, which means you can easily place them anywhere in your home. You don't need a bright, sunny window or a sun-drenched yard to grow beautiful, blooming plants.

Flowers That Grow Well in Low Light (Both Indoor and Outdoor)

Flowering plants that grow without direct sunlight fall into two main categories: shade-tolerant outdoor plants and low-light indoor flowers.

The distinction matters because "no sun" outdoors (filtered light under a tree canopy) is still brighter than most indoor environments.

Indoor Flowers That Grow Under Low Light

These indoor house plants can easily grow even if there is low light.

  • Peace Lily:

Known for its glossy, deep green oval leaves and unique white "hooded" flowers (spathes).

Low Light Performance: Excellent! This is one of the most reliable low-light flowers. While it can survive in very dark corners, it may produce fewer flowers. If it refuses to bloom, moving it slightly closer to a window will usually trigger new growth.

  • Anthurium:

Famous for its waxy, heart-shaped red, pink, or white blooms that look almost like plastic.

Low Light Performance: Moderate. They are tolerant of lower light than most flowering plants, but they do require a bit more than the Peace Lily to maintain their bright colors.

  • Bromeliads:

Tropical plants that grow in a rosette pattern with a central "cup" that holds water.

Low Light Performance: Good. Bromeliads are very adaptable. Note that they usually only bloom once in their lifetime, but the colorful petals stay vibrant for a long time.

  • African Violets:

Small, compact plants with fuzzy, velvet-like leaves and clusters of delicate flowers.

Low Light Performance: Fair. They are famous for low light, but they actually need consistent indirect light to produce flowers.

Outdoor Flowers That Can Grow Under Shade or Low Sunlight

These flower plants are dedicated to the outdoors with low sunlight. You can place them under shade, and they will thrive anyway.

  • Hydrangeas:

Deciduous shrubs are famous for their massive flower heads. Depending on soil acidity, flowers can range from blue to pink.

Low Light Performance: Moderate (Morning Sun Preferred). Total deep shade can result in weak stems and fewer blooms. They perform best in "dappled" shade.

  • Begonias:

Begonias are versatile plants with fleshy stems and waxy leaves. They produce constant small blooms throughout the season.

Low Light Performance: Excellent. Begonias are the "gold standard" for shaded garden beds of vibrant flowers. Some varieties, like the Wax Begonia or Tuberous Begonia, actually prefer full shade to avoid leaf scorch.

  • Bleeding Heart:

A classic perennial with arching stems draped with heart-shaped pink and white flowers that appear to "bleed" a single drop from the bottom.

Low Light Performance: Great. This is a woodland plant that thrives in cool, moist, and shady areas. It is one of the best choices for the darkest corners of your indoor garden.

  • Fuchsia:

They are often grown in hanging baskets; these produce exotic, multi-toned "teardrop" flowers that look like tiny ballerinas.

Low Light Performance: Excellent. Fuchsias are very sensitive to heat and direct sun, which will cause them to wilt rapidly. They are happiest in full to partial shade.

Common Mistakes When Growing Flowers in Shade

Overwatering, Assuming Shade Reduces Water Requirement

While shade does help plants retain more water, it won't completely remove their demand for it. Despite this, roots still need regular wetness.

As a result of root systems absorbing the majority of available water, soil may actually become very dry under thick tree canopies, a phenomenon known as "dry shade."

So, it is necessary to learn the water requirements of plants.

Choosing Sun-Loving Varieties for Shaded Spots

People frequently recommend easy-to-grow flowers for beginners, like marigolds, sunflowers, lavender, and petunias, but in reality, these plants really need six or more hours of sunny weather each day.

Plants that are shaded will grow leggy and never blossom, even though they will seem healthy. Be sure to check the plant tag or seed package for the light needs before choosing a species for a low-light area.

Ignoring the Condition of the Soil in Shaded Garden Areas

Root competition causes soil to become compacted and nutrient-poor in shaded regions beneath trees.

To help shade bloomers adapt to less photosynthetic input, improve the soil with organic flower fertilizers before planting. This will increase nutrient availability and moisture retention.
