  • Scientific Name: Grewia asiatica
  • Common Name: Falsa, Phalsa.
  • Description: A large, scraggly shrub or small tree to 15 ft or more, the phalsa has long, slender, drooping branches, the young branchlets densely coated with hairs. The alternate, deciduous, widely spaced leaves are broadly heart-shaped or ovate, pointed at the apex, oblique at the base, up to 8 in long and 6 in wide, and coarsely toothed, with a light, whitish bloom on the underside. Small, orange-yellow flowers are borne in dense cymes in the leaf axils. The round fruits, on 1-in peduncles are produced in great numbers in open, branched clusters.
  • Uses:  These berries are said to have a cooling effect and are used mostly to extract juice but they are also enjoyed as a fruit. It’s also known for purifying the blood which means falsas help in clearing out your skin.

Soil RequirementPhalsa are not very picky about soil, just be sure to avoid overly alkaline or acidic soil. They can grow in the soils which slightly acidic in the range of 6.0 to 6.5.
EnvironmentPhalsa plant prefers a hot and dry environment during fruiting. Phalsa relishes distinct winter and summer for the best crop growth, yield, and quality. The Phalsa plants can tolerate temperatures as high as 44°C.
Watering Plant is drought tolerant. In order to get good crop it requires watering regularly during summer months. As with all the fruits trees, irrigate them 7-14 days during growing season and every 4 to 6 weeks during the winter.
